Michelangelo Sculptor and Architect
It is difficult to describe the importance of the works by Michelangelo present in Florence. The fame of The David tends to obscure all of his other masterpieces here, almost as though it were the only great work by Michelangelo in Florence. For this reason, amongst our cultural itineraries, we have inserted a choice of themes built around Michelangelo. One possibility might be the works of Michelangelo's youth. Or this tour it is necessary to enter into three museums and a church in order to see works from the 1490s to the early 1500s. First the Buonarroti House in which we find the Madonna of The Ladder, and The Battle of The Centaurs. Then on to the church of Santo Spirito for the wooden cross. On to The Bargello where there are displayed the Bacchus, The Pitti Tondo. Finally, we reach The Accademia to see The David, and The Saint Mathew. Another possible theme might regard those of his architectural works commissioned by The Medici: The New Sacristy, and The Laurentian Library. This theme might also included works which Michelangelo created for various patrons but which then found their way into the Medici collections: the four Prisoners, Brutus, The Madonna of The Ladder and The Doni Tondo. |
