Florence Excursions
The Florentine countryside offers a treasure chest of art
and nature where magical serene landscapes resemble backgrounds
by Leonardo and Perugino. The tradition of the traveller in
the Tuscan countryside goes back to the seventeenth century.
There are a vast potential of thematic tours to choose from
in the Environs of Florence. We propose the unique Medieval
Church itinerary.
The building of the country churches ( or Pievi from
Latin Plebs = people - in other words- the ecclesiastic control
of the people in the countryside outside of the city) took
place at a time when the city was in constant transformation.
Many of the original roads connecting the cities to the countryside
no longer exist or have become mere mule tracks, hence the
Romanesque churches are often isolated and set in extremely
beautiful landscapes.
In
contrast the the country churches, the Monasteries were built
in the countryside for the specific purpose to retreat in nature
away from the city and the rest of the world.
In
the environs or Florence one can find several examples of beautiful
Medieval towns purposely built by the Florentine Republic to menace
the power of the rich Feudal Barons in the countryside surrounding
Florence.
The
Chianti Wine territory has not only beautiful landscapes but also
has interesting works of art in its churches and town museums. The
authorized guides of the AGT also offer custom tours upon request
should one desire more of a natural slant or why not, a taste
of some of the local specialties.
